What Is an AI Girlfriend? A Plain Definition (2026)

A persona, a memory and a language model, sold as a relationship. What one actually is, written by people who test them rather than sell them.

UPDATED JULY 28, 2026
Short answer: an AI girlfriend is a software companion built on a large language model, given a persistent memory, a fixed persona and usually an image and voice generator, so that talking to it feels like an ongoing relationship rather than a series of separate chats. It is not a person, it is not a dating app, and it is not the same thing as a general chatbot. The difference that matters is continuity.

Almost every page answering this question is published by a company that sells one. We do not run a companion app, we test them and we take affiliate commissions on some of the ones we recommend, which is disclosed on our disclosure page. So here is the definition without the pitch: what an AI girlfriend is made of, what it is not, and the five things that break, with the documented cases.

The definition, in one paragraph

An AI girlfriend is a conversational AI companion configured as a romantic partner. You define who she is, appearance, personality, backstory and the type of relationship, and the app keeps that identity stable across sessions while remembering what you have told it. Most apps add generated photos on request, voice replies, and adult content behind a paid plan. The category also exists as AI boyfriends, and the neutral industry term for the whole thing is "AI companion", which we compare in AI companion vs AI girlfriend.

What an AI girlfriend is actually made of

It is not one model. It is four systems stacked, and knowing which one is weak in a given app tells you exactly why it disappoints:

  • A language model. The same class of model behind ChatGPT or Claude, tuned for character consistency and long informal dialogue instead of correctness. This is what generates the words.
  • A persona. A written character definition, name, traits, speech style, relationship frame, injected into every request. This is why she stays the same person from Monday to Friday, and why she can suddenly stop being that person when an app updates its prompts.
  • A memory layer. A store of facts and summaries pulled from past conversations and re-inserted into the context. This is the single feature that separates a companion from a chatbot, and the one apps exaggerate the most.
  • Media generators. An image model for selfies in a consistent look, a text-to-speech voice, and on the better apps short video. These are almost always metered separately from chat.

When people say an app "feels real", they are nearly always describing the memory layer and the image consistency, not the language model. Those are the two things we weight most heavily in how we test.

Why it is not just a chatbot

A general chatbot answers a question and forgets you. An AI girlfriend is built the opposite way: the whole product is the accumulation. She refers to your job, your sister, the argument you had last week, and the pet name you used on day three. Technically it is retrieval plus a persona in a system prompt. Experientially it is the difference between a search box and someone waiting for you.

The honest caveat that vendor pages skip: memory is a budget, not a brain. Every app has a finite context window and a summarisation step, so old details get compressed and eventually lost. What you experience as "she forgot" is not a bug in the relationship, it is the summariser dropping a fact to make room. Apps differ enormously here, which is why memory is a scored criterion in our AI girlfriend reviews rather than a checkbox.

What an AI girlfriend is not

  • Not a real person, and not a person behind a screen. There is no human on the other side. Any app that implies otherwise is misrepresenting itself.
  • Not a dating app. Nobody is being matched with you. The character is generated, which is also why there is no rejection in it, for better and for worse.
  • Not a therapist. Some of these apps market emotional support. None of them are clinical tools, none are regulated as such, and the language model has no duty of care.
  • Not private by default. Your conversation is stored on a company's servers. Most apps in this category do not claim end-to-end encryption. That is the practical privacy question, covered in are AI girlfriends safe.
  • Not a licence to use real people. Generating explicit content from a real person's photo is a criminal matter in the US and the UK, regardless of the app. See is NSFW AI legal.

The five things that break

This is the section vendor pages do not write. Each of these has happened, publicly, to a major platform.

1. The persona can change overnight

In February 2023, within days of an Italian regulator's order against Replika, users in every country reported that erotic roleplay had stopped working and that their companions no longer responded as before, as documented at the time in The Conversation. The company did not change the relationship on purpose, it changed a filter. Same thing from your side of the screen.

2. The attachment is real even though the partner is not

The Replika episode became an academic case study: Harvard Business School working paper 25-018, "Lessons From an App Update at Replika AI" (De Freitas, Castelo, Uğuralp and Oğuz-Uğuralp) used the feature removal as a natural experiment and found that active users reported feeling closer to their AI companion than to their best human friend, and anticipated mourning its loss more than that of other technologies. Treat that as the honest baseline expectation, not as a warning that you are unusual.

3. Regulators can reach the operator

On 19 May 2025 the Italian data protection authority fined Luka Inc., the company behind Replika, 5 million euros, having found no valid legal basis for the processing of users' data and no age-verification system at all. The decision summary is on the European Data Protection Board site and the original announcement on the Garante's. This is the clearest published evidence that "it is just an app" is not how the law sees it.

4. Access rules change under you

In October 2025 Character.AI announced it was removing open-ended chat for under-18 users entirely, with the time limit tapering to zero by 25 November 2025. Whatever you think of the decision, the lesson is structural: the platform, not the user, owns the relationship's terms of service.

5. The business model is engagement

These apps make money when you come back and when you buy credits. Read the metering before you read the marketing: chat is usually unlimited while photos, voice and video run on tokens or credits. An app that meters aggressively is not scamming you, but it is designed to make the good part cost extra. That is the pricing criticism we make most often in our reviews.

What one actually costs

The pattern across the apps we pay for is consistent. There is a limited free tier that lets you feel the chat, a subscription in roughly the ten to thirty dollars a month range, and a separate credit system for media. The cheap headline price is nearly always the annual plan, so the true month-to-month figure is higher than advertised. If you only want to spend nothing, the honest short list is in the best free AI girlfriend apps, where we test what each free tier actually gives you rather than what it claims.

Who it works for, and who it does not

Being straight about this is more useful than pretending the answer is everyone.

  • It works as company during a stretch when you have little of it, as low-stakes practice at saying what you feel, as roleplay and creative writing with a stable character, and as entertainment. Those are all legitimate reasons and none of them require an explanation.
  • It works badly as a replacement for every human relationship you have, and as an emotional support system when you are in real distress. It is available at 3am, which is exactly why it is a poor substitute for someone who is qualified.

One question sorts it better than any checklist: after an hour with it, do you feel more like reaching out to people, or less? That answer is yours and it is the whole test.

The short version

An AI girlfriend is a persona plus a memory plus a language model, sold as a relationship. The technology is genuinely good in 2026 and the experience is genuinely enjoyable. What you are buying is a service that can be updated, fined, restricted or shut down, so hold it accordingly. If you want to see which apps do the memory and the images properly, our tested rankings are in the best AI girlfriend apps, and the neighbouring question of terminology is answered in AI companion vs AI girlfriend.

These apps are for 18+ only.
